Talofa lava, I’m Makerita the Community Generator for Porirua.
I have deep roots in Porirua. I arrived in Titahi Bay from Samoa when I was just 3 years old. For the last 14 years I’ve been the manager of Wesley Community Action’s Cannons Creek hub, where I’ve been lucky enough to work alongside the Cannons Creek community as they came up with local solutions to local problems – particularly the problems caused by poverty and high levels of debt.
These solutions include a financial wellbeing program called Good Cents, the Wellington Region Fruit and Vegetable Co-op and the Porirua Timebank.
All these initiatives have been developed and driven by people in the local community. I truly believe that communities can do amazing things when you put them in the driving seat. That’s why I’m so excited about my role as a Community Generator. I’ve always loved to dream with people and now I get to do it every day!
I’m so looking forward to walking alongside people as they flesh out their ideas to help generate wealth in Porirua. For me it’s all about dreaming it, planning it, then doing it.
